Ringwood man whose father has cancer to run 100k in one day
Jack Miller will tackle the challenge this Saturday to raise money for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation.

A Ringwood man whose father has been diagnosed with incurable cancer plans to run 100k in one day to raise money for charity.
Jack Miller will set off from Lyndhurst at 4am on Saturday 21 June and finish at Poole Park an estimated 12 hours later.
The 25-year-old aimed to raise £2,500 for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF), which provides financial support to local families suffering hardship because of the disease. He has already smashed this target, so far raising £2,621.
He said: “The farthest I have ever run is 27km, so this is well beyond my comfort zone. But I will also have family members joining me along the route, including my sister Milly, my uncle, and some of my cousins, and hopefully together we can encourage each other and raise a good amount of money for this great local charity.”
His father Ian hopes to run the last kilometre with his son. The 51-year-old was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in March 2023 and underwent six weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before being given the all-clear that November.
However, in February this year, Ian learned his cancer had metastasised in his lungs. Following three cycles of chemo, he has learned his cancer has been reduced but remains incurable.
Jack said: “My dad’s cancer is sadly not going to go away but despite this he has maintained a hugely positive attitude throughout and is working every day to stay as fit as he can. It felt like a fundraising challenge was the least I could do while he is dealing with this enormous process and I love running, so I decided to use the Longest Day of the year to do something really ambitious.
“We looked around for a charity which could benefit from my challenge and learned the DCCF helps families facing financial hardship because of a cancer diagnosis.
“Dad and I had been really impressed by another recent for fundraiser for the DCCF in which two friends ran seven marathons in seven days. Like me, they had never run a significant distance before, but what they achieved with the support of their friends and families was incredible.”
Eve Went, co-founder of the DCCF, said: “What Jack and his family are seeking to achieve is nothing short of incredible and we are immensely grateful to have been chosen to benefit from their efforts. The money they raise will go directly to Dorset families who are not only struggling under the weight of cancer, but also the added stress of financial hardship.”
