Roadworks to create diversion for Bournemouth and Christchurch
Resurfacing works will close parts of Holdenhurst Road next week as second phase of a £2 million highways maintenance programme begins.
Sections of Holdenhurst Road in Bournemouth will be closed to traffic in both directions next week when repair works to the road and footpaths start on Monday 24 June.
Parts of the road between Buchanan Avenue and Capstone Place will be resurfaced using a series of phased road closures for just over two weeks. Meanwhile, work will also take place on the Springbourne and Ashley Road signalised junctions, as well as the side roads and areas in between where the road has deteriorated.
The road will be closed in both directions while the work takes place with diversion routes in place.
For traffic heading towards Christchurch, the diversion will take motorists via the A338 Wessex Way and Cooper Dean roundabout and back to the Kings Park off slip. Those travelling towards Bournemouth will follow a temporary route from Iford roundabout via Cooper Dean roundabout to Springbourne roundabout.
The work is intended to provide a long-lasting smooth and quiet road surface and is the start of the second phase of a £2 million highways maintenance programme for Holdenhurst Road.
Rhys Bright, head of engineering at BCP Council, said: “This programme of work is being carried out over a three-year period with the first phase already underway. Since October last year, we’ve been resurfacing footpaths and carrying out preparation work ready for the second and third phases.
“A further section of Holdenhurst Road from Wellington Road to Capstone Place will be resurfaced next year and will form the final phase of the project.
“We appreciate that during this work, local journeys will be affected with noise that may impact residents living nearby.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding, and where possible, please plan your journeys in advance to allow more time.”
The first week of planned work will consist of a deep reconstruction of the road, so 24-hour closures will be in place. At 7am on Monday 24 June, the Ashley Road signals will be turned off and the section from Ashley Road to Buchanan Avenue closed until 6pm on Friday 28 June.
The A3049 Ashley Road itself will remain open until 7am on Thursday 27 June when the closure will be expanded to include Harrison Close.
At 6pm on Friday 28 June, all closures will be removed for the weekend.
The second week will consist of daily daytime closures between 7am and 6pm, with Harrison Close to Buchanan Avenue shut again for resurfacing, followed by Maddison Avenue and Jefferson Avenue.
Resurfacing work at the Springbourne junction will be carried out overnight during the evenings of Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 July from 7pm to 6am, with the road open as usual during the day.
The diversion route during this period will be via Cleveland Road, St Clements Road, Palmerston Road, Centenary Way and Ashley Road in both directions.
