Rookie cyclist to embark on non-stop ride for cancer charity
On Saturday 19 September Chris Helberg, 26, will attempt to cycle from his workplace in Bracknell, Berkshire, to Bournemouth Pier - without stopping – to raise £3,000 for Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF).
A self-confessed ‘rookie’ cyclist, he has set himself the challenge of cycling 85 miles in 10 hours.
He will be joined on the ride by seven workmates, all cycling for different charities.
Chris said, “My family in Bournemouth are huge supporters of DCCF.
“This fantastic charity gives help to Dorset people who are struggling financially as they battle cancer.
“My mum has had cancer and my grandfather died from the disease, so it’s very satisfying to know my efforts will be helping people who really need it.
“I’m not really what you would call an experienced cyclist. I love cycling, but this is way beyond anything I have done on a bike before, so I will be relying on my friends to encourage me and other friends to throw me water bottles along the route.”
Meryl Ponsford a trustee of DCCF, said: “Fundraisers like Chris are now more vital to our work than ever.
“Lockdown has had a huge impact on our events, postponing most and even cancelling some, so it really is fantastic to see what Chris is willing to do to make sure we continue to help the county’s cancer patients.”
