A new policy regarding taxis for hire in Christchurch means that journeys are now safer for anyone calling or hailing a cab in the Borough.
The policy, introduced following concerns raised by members of the public, means that all taxi drivers are now required to pass an English language test and a ‘knowledge’ test of roads in the area as well as a test showing that they are well-acquainted with the Highway Code and the conditions of their licence.
A scheduled inspection programme of all taxis has also been introduced.
Cllr David Flagg, Chairman of Christchurch Council’s Licensing Committee, said: “We have introduced this policy as a way of raising the standards for all taxi drivers in the Borough and ensuring that everyone taking a cab has a safer journey.
“We are determined to take this seriously. As an example, at a recent Licensing sub-committee disciplinary hearing, a licence for a driver and vehicle was revoked for not complying with the new policy.”
