Proposals to make an area of Bournemouth town centre more attractive and vibrant for shoppers, businesses and residents have gone on display.
Beale Place is set to become pedestrianised as part of longer-term plans to regenerate this key shopping destination. As part of the Council’s commitment to regenerate key sites across the town, proposals are underway to create a contemporary street scene in and around Beale Place. Any major improvements will be subject to funding.
Councillor John Beesley, leader of the council, said, “The aim is to create a safer and more attractive environment for the many people living, working and visiting this part of town.
“By reducing traffic through the town centre and giving pedestrians greater priority, we want to provide an environment where people meet up and enjoy the surroundings.”
Under the plans the Council is proposing to change traffic flow in and around Beale Place. An experimental traffic order will be implemented in Yelverton Road, Albert Road, Post Office Road and Richmond Hill. This will mean:
- Yelverton road will become a no through road with two-way traffic entering and exiting via Richmond Hill. The road would be stopped up by Barclays Bank.
- Albert Road will become a no through road with two-way traffic entering from Richmond Hill. The road would be stopped up by No12 Albert Rd.
- Delivery vehicles will only be permitted into the southern part of Old Christchurch Rd via Gervis Place between 10pm and 9am. From Gervis Place delivery vehicles will have the option to exit Old Christchurch Rd via Post Office Road, Albert Road, or continue up Old Christchurch Road.
- Beale Place will be closed to all vehicle traffic at all times.
Councillor John Beesley added, “One of the key elements in proposals like this is to ensure that there are no significant negative effects on traffic flow. By using an experimental traffic order this will allow the plan to be further evaluated before making the arrangement permanent or carrying out any major construction works.”
People can view the proposals and have their say by visiting www.bournemouth.gov.uk/bealeplaceconsultation. Consultation will close on Sunday 26 June 2016. Residents are also welcome to attend a public exhibition on Thursday 9 June 2016 from 12 to 2pm and 5 to 7pm at The Norfolk Royale Hotel, Richmond Hill where officers will be available to answer any questions.
