Songs in the Key of Love
Phoenix Musical Society
Review by Marilyn Barber
Celebrating Valentine’s Day which was earlier in the week, members of the society sang numbers from both old and new shows, illustrating courting, love, marriage and memory.
It gave singers from 12 to 82 the chance to perform, with both the youngest and oldest putting in some fine renditions. Olivia, 12, gave a spirited and animated delivery of Maybe from Annie, whilst Scott, 82, received huge applause for Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love.
The society had to change its plans because of illness, going from an ensemble of 21 to 14, but clearly all had worked hard to produce polished performances.
There were too many singers to mention everyone, but some stand out performances need accolades, notably from Phil with Maria from West Side Story, Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, with the chorus for Get Me to the Church on Time (My Fair Lady) and with Linda with Sunrise Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof.
Chelsea’s You Must Love Me from Evita was tear jerking and Rachel shone with the chorus on I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta my Hair from South Pacific and with On My Own from Les Miserables.
Laura has a hugely powerful voice which gave so much emotional impact to Love Never Dies.
The show ended on the catchy Love is All Around, followed by Bring Me Sunshine.
And on a stormy week, that’s what we all needed.
