Spree of diesel thefts across Dorset
Red diesel, which can only be used in authorised vehicles, has been stolen from three areas recently and police are urging prevention methods.
A commercial isolated property near Wimborne is amongst three places which have suffered a theft of red diesel. The others are in Winfrith and Duntish.
Red diesel can only be used in authorised vehicles. Many farm tanks are full this time of year as the maize harvest comes to completion.
Dorset Police is urging farmers and landowners to adopt a number of prevention methods, including: improving security with fences, lighting, and cameras: securing fuel tanks with robust locks and alarms; installing alarm systems; using deterrents like ‘diesel dye’ to make fuel traceable; and installing sight gauges on tanks and monitoring them regularly for signs of tampering or low levels.
Police say that anyone who sees any suspicious activity near diesel tanks should call 999 if the offence is actually taking place.
For other suspicious activity, they should note down the details, in particular vehicle registration numbers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Dorset Police at www.dorset.police.uk. Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online at Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling Freephone 0800 555.
