Students from the National Citizenship course at Bournemouth and Poole College will once again be hosting the Summer Games in order to raise money for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF). The local charity supports young people from a wide range of youth organisations and provides them with scholarships and bursaries in order to support their personal development and help them pursue their ambitions. Simon Weston OBE, a patron of the charity, says the aim of JTYAF is “to promote the success and the achievement of true potential in young talented people.”
The BPCSU Summer Games have become an annual fun filled charity day, with last year’s successful fundraiser seeing £265.21 taken in donations for the foundation. This year, the event will be held on Wednesday 21 May at Poole Park between 10.30am and 3.30pm. Alex Leam (Student Engagement Officer) said “The summer games are a highlight of the Students’ Union events calendar at Bournemouth and Poole College. It’s always very satisfying to see so many students coming together to raise money for such a great cause”. It costs just £1 for each team member to enter (with special prizes being awarded to those who raise above and beyond £1 per person) and anyone can get involved – the more the merrier. Various outdoor activities will be taking place throughout the day on inflatables on a grass pitch. Some of these will involve water, no doubt conjuring up images of a ‘Total Wipe-Out’ style course in your head already, so don’t be afraid to get a little bit wet! As standard, fancy dress is compulsory, which already promises to make the day an exciting and comical one. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume so unleash your imagination and get a little creative. As well as the best costume, prizes will also be awarded to those who raise the most money per team for the charity and those achieving the most points overall during the games.
Whether you are taking part in the games themselves, or simply cheering on a friend or family member, don’t forget to dig deep into those pockets and donate.
