Students co-designed and facilitated a stakeholder event for young people at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital
Students from schools across Bournemouth are helping the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) shape plans for the future care of young people.
More than 50 pupils aged 16-21 years from St Peter’s School, Bournemouth School for Girls, Brockenhurst College, among others, attended a successful stakeholder event for young people at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH).
The event was designed and facilitated by young volunteers in partnership with the Trust and provided a platform for young people to air their views on inpatient services, as well as making suggestions about how the Trust can improve its young volunteers programme.
Ideas to improve the Trust’s patient experience for young people included the installation of Wi-Fi and providing a break out room where young patients could meet their friends during visiting hours.
Suggestions were also made about how the Trust could improve its volunteering programme for young people, including assisting young volunteers with first aid training and providing options to make things for patients outside of the hospital, for example memory books for patients with dementia.
The suggestions will be used by the Trust’s patient Engagement Team to make recommendations about how to improve services for young patients and enhance the volunteering programme for young people.
RBCH Head of Patient Engagement Sue Mellor said: “We were absolutely delighted these young people took the time to give us their feedback; they are not only our possible patients of the future but our health professionals of the future too.
“By finding out what matters most to young people we can improve the care we provide and support them in their career development through initiatives such as our young peoples’ volunteering programme” she said.
