Diverse Abilities Plus is appealing for participants to take part in the Chinese boat race across Poole Park’s lake. Companies, families and friends regardless of experience or disability are invited – no experience is required and full coaching will be given.
Each team requires 17 enthusiastic members, consisting of 16 paddlers and a drummer. An experienced helm will join the crew, to keep the boat pointing in the right direction. Spectators can also enjoy the excitement by cheering on the teams.
All fundraising will be split equally between Diverse Abilities Plus, the only Dorset charity that supports children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities, and Poole Hospital Charity, which supports the local hospital, by providing funding and care for its visitors, beyond that provided by the NHS.
The charities decided to join forces for this event as Dr Anthony Cronin, who is part of the medical paediatric team in the Child Development Centre at Poole Hospital, also provides medical cover for Langside School, one of Diverse Abilities Plus’ services.
Sharon Wells, Events Fundraiser at Diverse Abilities Plus, and Pamela Bell from Poole Hospital Charity, are encouraging people to take part and say: “Team places are limited, so it would be advisable to book early this year.”
Anyone over the age of 12 can take part, but they must be confident in deep water and wearing a buoyancy aid. An adult must accompany participants under 18 during the event and it is advised that pregnant women do not take part in the race. The team entry fee is £170, which is approximately £10 per person for a full team. A minimum of £750 per team (just £50 per person) is also required as sponsorship for the event
