Congratulations are served to the Talbot Heath and West Hants Tennis Academy team on their return from Qatar, having secured fourth place in the World Tennis Championships last weekend. The team, consisting of Ellie Baker, Lauryn John-Baptiste, Anna Battersby, Jodie Burrage and Mille Smythe had to win every national tournament – culminating in the Aberdare Cup victory – to be selected to represent England at the World Championships. They are placed as number one tennis team in Great Britain and Talbot Heath is the first Dorset school to have represented England at the World Championships.
Head of Sport at Talbot Heath, Miss Marks, spoke of their achievement: “The team should be incredibly proud of themselves, as we are of them for reaching the semi-finals. They initially topped a tough group, beat China in the quarter finals and narrowly missed a spot in the final after losing in a tie break against Turkey. The German team are notoriously strong and we fought until the very end. A great team effort by all.”
The Head, Mrs Holloway, added how proud she was of the team and their outstanding performance: “They have shown outstanding skill, determination and teamwork to reach the semi-finals. It has been an honour for Talbot Heath, alongside West Hants, to represent England at the World Championships.”
The girls’ championship was ultimately won by Australia, followed by Turkey, Germany then England.
