The Dorset Rugby Landscape Explained
Rugby in Dorset occupies an undersung but well-earned place in the English game, a county without a professional franchise yet with a club network that runs deep, a pyramid presence at the sixth tier of national competition, and a track record of producing players who have reached the very top of the sport.
The Governing Structure
In rugby today, Dorset’s clubs operate within the Dorset & Wilts RFU, with 51 affiliated clubs competing across multiple tiers of the English rugby union pyramid.
The upper divisions sit at tier six, competitive enough to attract serious players while keeping the community character that defines grassroots rugby in England.
The Leading Clubs
Several clubs define the competitive upper end of Dorset rugby:
- Bournemouth RFC (founded 1893) are the county’s most historically significant club, currently leading Regional 2 South Central at tier six in the 2025-26 season.
- Wimborne RFC currently sit third in the same division on 62 points, making their rivalry with Bournemouth one of the more keenly contested in the league.
- North Dorset RFC, based in Gillingham since 1951, compete in Regional 2 Severn at tier six and won the Dorset & Wilts Cup as recently as 2015–16.
Below these, a broad network of community sides including Weymouth & Portland, Swanage & Wareham, Sherborne, Bridport, and Blandford keeps the game alive across the more rural parts of the county.
Notable Players
Andy Long, born in Poole, came through Bournemouth RFC before earning an England cap at hooker against Australia in November 1997.
Ben Gollings attended Canford School near Wimborne, where he led the school to National Schools Sevens success in 1997, before playing for Bournemouth RFC.
He went on to become the all-time leading points scorer in World Rugby Sevens Series history, finishing his international career with 2,652 points.
