Thieves targeting Mercedes cars in Bournemouth area
Following one successful theft and one failed attempt, Dorset Police have issued advice to protect keyless cars.
Dorset Police have issued a warning about protecting keyless vehicles following the theft of one Mercedes-AMG car in Bournemouth and the attempted theft of another.
At approximately 1.35am on Thursday 29 August, four people wearing balaclavas attempted to steal a Mercedes-AMG car from the driveway of an address in the Wallisdown area. They were unsuccessful and left in a car.
A few hours later at around 3.15am, a Mercedes-AMG car was stolen during a similar incident in the East Howe area.
It is believed the offenders were using a device to attempt to connect to the car key’s signal and trick the vehicle into thinking the key was nearby, meaning it will unlock automatically and the ignition can be started.
Police Constable Adam Carr, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “An investigation is underway into both incidents to identify those responsible.
“I would like to take the opportunity to remind the public to ensure their keyless vehicle is protected.”
How to protect your keyless entry car:
- When at home keep your car key (and the spare) well away from the car.
- Put the keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday bag, and check if the bag or pouch is still working every few months.
- Reprogramme your keys if you buy a second-hand car.
- Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it’s not being used.
