Darren Wheeler, wood turner and sculptor from Dorset is supporting the regional charity Autism Wessex by collecting donations during Dorset Arts Week 2014.
Darren will be opening his home and workshop to the public during Dorset Arts Week, 24 May-8 June 2014 to hold daily woodwork demonstrations whilst displaying his unique pieces of work. Darren takes timber from local sources and reveals the colours and forms which nature has hidden beneath the bark. He will be asking visitors for any spare cash to support Autism Wessex, a charity close to his heart.
Darren comments “My son, Jacob, has needed a lot of support with communication over the years. Until he was about 18 months his only form of communication was a high pitched, continuous scream. Jacob is now five-years-old and we have learnt how to communicate effectively with him, we’ve had a long journey, and I can now see it has been successful with Jacob starting mainstream school. He feels confident and happy and is willing to try new things. I want to support Autism Wessex to help others who are going through similar things.”
Autism Wessex supports thousands of children, adults and families affected by autism in the Wessex region to live fuller, happier lives.
Paul Reade, Community and Events Fundraiser said “The charity relies heavily on donations from the public and we are very grateful for people like Darren who choose to support a good cause.”
Autism Wessex offers free help and support on a range of issues, such as benefits, housing, behaviour and employment. The team also runs workshops, training courses and facilitates weekly drop-in groups for adults with Asperger syndrome.
