Jamie Dennis, a boxer, set out to cycle 100 miles and run 19 miles per week for three weeks, while donning a multi-coloured tutu. He dubbed this the ‘Covid-119’ challenge which he began on 20 April.

So far he has raised £800, which will be used primarily to support the CCU’s memory boxes which are filled with items such as books and teddies intended to bring back happy memories of a parent who has passed away on the unit.

Some of the money will also be used to purchase wellbeing goods for staff working on the unit.

“With the current situation and strain on the NHS I really wanted to help out in whatever way I could and give a little back,” said Jamie.

“Sadly my nan, Barbara Veale, passed away six months ago on CCU and I’ve been wanting to do an event or some kind of activity in memory of her.

“All of the staff did such a great job of looking after her and keeping her comfortable while constantly keeping the family informed. This was really a deciding factor as to where I wanted to donate the money.”

Housemate Elliott Longly joined him for the cycling encouraging him along the way.

Since finishing his challenge, Jamie has decided to continue supporting CCU by taking on a second “Covid-119” challenge which will involve cycling 100 miles and running 19 miles all in one day.
