The winners of a schools competition that helps children learn about the magic of recycling by conjuring up a ‘waste wizard’ have been presented with their prizes.
The Dorset Waste Partnership asked primary school children in Christchurch and East Dorset to make a ‘waste wizard’ at home out of items that can be recycled using their ‘recycle for Dorset’ collection service.
Each school picked two winners, all of whom the will be given a tour of a recycling plant and composting facility to see how their waste is turned into new products.
The winning entries from each school were then divided into Keystage 1 and 2 categories and judged by the Dorset Waste Partnership. The panel was dazzled by the children’s imaginative use of recyclable materials to craft their magical characters.
The Key Stage 1 winner was Rose Eastwood from Year 1 at Somerford Community School. Rose’s pink and glittery lady wizard was magicked together from a softener bottle, tin can, cereal box, jelly pot, newspaper, leaflet, yoghurt pots, egg box, milk bottle, food tray and toilet roll.
Winner of the Key Stage 2 category was Year 4 student Joe O’Connor from Colehill First School. Joe’s google-eyed wizard and his charming pet pig were brought to life using a jelly pot, magazine, egg box, bottle top, drinks bottle and mini drinks can.
Rose and Joe were presented with fabulous eco packs filled with fun, environmentally friendly goodies by Cllrs Sally Derham-Wilkes and Steve Butler, DWP Joint Committee members for Christchurch and East Dorset respectively, together with the DWP’s own ‘Walter the Waste Wizard’.
