A quarter peal will be rung on Wimborne Minster bells on Saturday 9 May from 10.30 – 11.30am to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the ending of hostilities in Europe.
Last month the Leader of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon William Hague, wrote on behalf of the Government to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York highlighting an opportunity for churches to play a role in this year’s commemorations for Victory in Europe Day, as part of a weekend of events Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May. The contribution which churches were invited to make was the ringing of bells across the country at 11am on Saturday 9 May.
“Our bellringers are always keen to join in with the ringing of the Minster’s fine set of bells on special national occasions and currently are waiting for news of the royal birth so that they can mark the event by the ringing of bells as they did after the birth of Prince George”, said Anthony Oliver from the Minster.
A further event over the weekend is at 3pm on Friday 8 May when there will be a two-minutes silence observed across Britain. It will mark the precise moment in 1945 when Winston Churchill officially declared the end of the war in Europe.
