Wimborne school raises £4,700 for Ferndown charity
Staff, students and family from Wimborne’s Beaucroft Foundation School raised money for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

On Saturday 10 May, dedicated staff and students from Beaucroft Foundation School and College, as well as supportive friends and family, completed a 40k sponsored walk to raise funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).
The JTYAF was established in 2008 to honour the memory of John Thornton, a young Royal Marines Officer from Ferndown who was tragically killed, at the age of 22, whilst serving in Afghanistan. To celebrate what would have been Thornton’s 40th birthday, the foundation challenged supported to complete a challenge related to the number 40.
Members of Team Beaucroft undertook the challenge of completing either a full 40K or a 20K trek along the picturesque coast, starting at Sandbanks and concluding in Lymington.
The JTYAF is particularly dear to the Wimborne-based school, as the charity has consistently supported and provided funds to the school since 2011.
Despite not being seasoned walkers, Team Beaucroft embraced this endurance challenge with enthusiasm. The team was buoyed by the glorious weather and the tremendous support from passing members of the public.
In total, Team Beaucroft smashed their fundraising target of £3,000, raising a grand total of £4,700.
Joe Barnett, co-headteacher at Beaucroft Foundation School & College, said: “It was a wonderful event – an amazing team taking on a marathon challenge for a wonderful charity that has a long-standing connection with Beaucroft.”
The foundation extended thanks to everyone for their generosity and support.
Pete Thornton, chair of the JTYAF, said: “We are totally overwhelmed by this challenge and the kindness and generosity of almost 200 people who sponsored Team Beaucroft. Special thanks must also go to all those who took part. It was a tough challenge and an incredible fundraising achievement.”
