Wimborne school students to compete in China and Peru
Oliver Pettifer and Will Rabjohns, Year 13 students at Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne, will be competing in sporting events during August.
Two Year 13 students from Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne will be competing in high-profile sporting events during August.
Oliver Pettifer will head to Luoyand in China to take part in the UCI Junior Track World Championships, while Will Rabjohns is heading off to Lima in Peru to compete in the World Athletics U20 Championships,
Oliver will take part in the sprint events of the UCI Junior Track World Championship, specifically the individual sprint, Keirin and 1km time trial.
Keirin is a type of bicycle racing, where cyclists ride around a banked track.
Recently, Oliver competed in the UEC Track Juniors/U23 European Championships in Germany and won the Junior Keirin competition, becoming Junior European Keirin Champion.
Oliver was doing over 70 kmph when he crossed the finish line.
Meanwhile, Will was invited to join the British Milers Club (BMC), the country’s premier middle-distance athletics club, where membership is limited to those who achieve the required qualifying times.
At a BMC 800m race on 6 July, he came second and ran a new personal best time of 1.47.22, the sixth fastest time ever for a UK schoolboy and a World U20 qualifying time.
Brian Boyes, interim headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s School – which is part of Initio Learning Trust – said: “The whole school community is incredibly proud of these two talented sportsmen, who have shown commitment and dedication to their sports at the highest level.”
