Wimborne schoolgirl wins £250 for school library
A creative six-year-old girl from Wimborne has won a national competition by designing a superhero-themed book cover.
Organised by Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care, the competition asked children to design a cover in which the main character wears magical super-powered glasses. Youngsters were invited to submit their entries with all entry proceeds from the £1 suggested donation going to Alzheimer’s Society.
Matilde Cabell, a year one pupil at Wimborne First School, won £250 of book vouchers for her school’s newly refurbished library thanks to her winning design. She also received a collection of children’s books and a notebook with her design on the front.
Matilde, who loves to draw and read, was both surprised and thrilled to have won the Scrivens competition.
Her mother, Ilaria Lorenzon, said: “Matilde saw the competition when we visited the branch for her eye test. She always gets her colouring pens out after school and was keen to put her creative skills to the test. This is the first time she’s entered a competition, so we are all incredibly proud of her and sharing in her excitement.”
Cyndy Czarnokoza, branch manager at Scrivens on The Square, Wimborne, said: “Alzheimer’s Society is our chosen charity, and this activity was a fun way to engage children and raise awareness of its work.
“This year’s competition was also themed to encourage children to show their creativity by showcasing the power of spectacles with a superhero theme. Matilde came to us because she was struggling to read her books and see the board at school, so not only has she gained her ‘superpower’ with new glasses, but her colourful and imaginative design was truly out of this world.”
