Wimborne Town manager Steve Cuss boosted his squad’s match fitness with two games in less than 24-hours at the weekend. The Magpies hosted Poole Town in a pre-season local derby on Friday night, and then faced an away game at Gillingham Town the next afternoon.
Cuss fielded different starting XIs for both games, with the sides comprised of both first and reserve team players. He declared the experiment a success, saying, “I wanted to give all the players a 90 minute run out, which we achieved. And we did not pick up any injuries.”
Friday night’s game against Poole saw Mark Gamble, who has had a prolific summer, put Wimborne into an early lead, but the visitors bounced back to win 3-1.
On Saturday a Matt Kemble double put the Magpies into a 2-0 lead but Gillingham forced a recovery as the game ended 2-2.
Wimborne face two more friendlies ahead of the start of the season on 17 August. On Tuesday (6 August) they face Bridport at Cuthbury; kick off 7.45pm. Then on Saturday (10 August), they visit Bashley, kick off 3pm.
