Winter programme provided happiness for Dorset children
Healthy meals and lots of activities, including days out, were on offer at Dorset Council’s Winter in Dorset sessions.
Children in Dorset not only took part in fun activities during the winter holidays, but they also enjoyed healthy meals as part of the national Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) scheme.
Winter in Dorset, run by Dorset Council, offered a diverse mix of free and low-cost sessions across the county. From sports camps and Forest School adventures to arts and crafts, Christmas parties and family days out, children were able to stay active, creative and connected during the festive period.
More than 700 children took part in the activities, with almost 2,000 hot, nutritious meals served to support healthy eating during the school break. Families eligible for benefit-related free school meals accessed the programme at no cost, ensuring support reached those who would benefit most.
One of the highlights was a festive family day at Monkey World, attended by over 300 people. With support from Friendly Food Club, children enjoyed creating their own chocolate banana Santas. Father Christmas and a Book Elf joined the celebrations, giving out more than 200 new books arranged by Dorset Library Services. Families also took part in sand art, crafts and hands-on creative activities in Monkey World’s activity room.
Winter in Dorset also offered tailored sessions to ensure children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) could take part in a way that suited their needs.
Cllr Sutton, Dorset Council’s Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: “Winter in Dorset is about more than just activities – it’s about creating memories, supporting families, and ensuring every child has access to healthy food and positive experiences during the holidays. We’re proud of the difference this”
