Witchampton First School celebrates Harvest Festival
A Dorset primary school held a special ceremony to celebrate the harvest season.
A Dorset primary school held a special ceremony on Friday 11 October to mark Harvest Festival, the annual celebration of food and the harvest.
Harvest Festival began on 6 October, and is the traditional start to the autumn season. The date changes each year and occurs on the full moon that appears closest to the autumn equinox.
Witchampton Church of England First School celebrated the harvest festival in St Mary’s Church in the village of Witchampton. The event was attended by schoolchildren, parents and local members of the congregation.
Children and parents brought in food items to donate to Wimborne food Bank which helps families in crisis.
After attendees were welcomed by the school’s Executive Headteacher Sharon Staddon, the whole school sung songs and then individual classes read out poems, shared a thank you message, and children as young as four years old recited poems and rhymes.
Rev Bill French from Wimborne Minster gave a reflection and a blessing. His sermon reminded the audience how fortunate they were to have ample food and choices compared to people in the past and those less fortunate in other parts of the world.
The short service was a wonderful community event to mark the beginning of the autumn season.
Witchampton First School is currently open to admissions for the next school year. Visit https://www.witchampton.dorset.sch.uk for more details.
