Work progressing on Poole Park Railway
Local people have been watching the work with interest, and there is the opportunity to become a volunteer once it has opened.
The re-instatement of Poole Park Railway is on track – and you can become involved.
Work began last December and it is hoped to bring the service back this spring.
The track has now been fully removed and the old engine shed demolished, ready for the next phase of works.
Cllr Mark Anderson, portfolio holder for Environment and Place, BCP Council, said: “I’m so pleased that work here is on schedule. Weather appears to have been kind since the commencement of works and we hope that this continues. The rejuvenation of Poole is a key priority in our council’s Big Plan, so bringing the railway back to Poole Park reinforces this commitment.”
Track Systems, based in Shropshire, were awarded the contract to construct a new railway track and engine shed. They were subsequently successful in a procurement process, which will see them also deliver an electric engine and carriages.
Cllr Anderson, added: “I understand the construction team on site have got a growing fan club, with regular young visitors keen to see the heavy plant machinery in action. Many can’t wait to see the tracks laid and are excited to get on the railway once it reopens. I make no apology for also sharing this excitement.”
Construction of the tracks is due to commence next month, alongside the construction of a brand new engine shed.
BCP Council is keen to hear from people who would like to join the growing team of volunteers keen to support the railway once it has reopened. Those interested are urged to email l.recreationdevelopment@bcpcouncil.gov.uk for further information.
