Young people from Poole will get the chance to go behind the scenes at Borough of Poole, as they take on a variety of council jobs in support of National Takeover Day.
From 8 – 12 June, young people from the local area will be working alongside a number of different council departments to get a real insight into how decisions that affect them and their families are made.
Just some of tasks that will be undertaken by the young recruits next week include assisting with calls received by Borough of Poole’s busy customer services team, working with the manager of Rossmore Leisure Centre, helping to develop the offering for teenagers in Poole libraries and shadowing one of the council’s Strategic Directors, Jan Thurgood.
Takeover Day, a national initiative run by the Children’s Commissioner, is designed to give young people the opportunity to experience the world of work in a supportive environment, including being involved in decision-making. Previous years have seen young people take over the roles of Ministers, MPs, teachers, councillors, museum curators and even TV reporters.
Cllr Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Capital Projects, Borough of Poole, said: “We are keen to support initiatives that encourage young people to become actively involved in their communities. National Takeover Day provides them with a meaningful experience working with local organisations to learn new skills which will stand them in good stead for the future. We look forward to welcoming them to Borough of Poole next week.”
