The A338 Bournemouth Spur Road has been shortlisted by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West for the Civil Engineering Awards 2017.
A £22 million project for the major rebuild of the A338 Bournemouth Spur Road, completed in May 2016, has been shortlisted by the Institution of Civil Engineers South West for the prestigious Civil Engineering Awards 2017, along with eleven other schemes including Project Wareham, Hayward Main Bridge and Wessex Water’s Supply Grid.
The awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. From small projects, refurbishment work through to large new build schemes, the awards will showcase the breadth of work civil engineers are completing every year in the area.
Miranda Housden, ICE South West Regional Director said: “Our Civil Engineering Awards recognise projects which promote the excellence of the engineering profession.
“The South West is full of innovative and inspiring projects and engineers, from a wide range of sectors and the shortlist for this year’s awards really showcases fantastic projects in amazing locations across the region.”
She explained that the A338 reconstruction project was completed safely and sustainably, using a value engineering approach, within nine months and within budget, delivering more reliable journey times and improved user safety.
Hayward Main Bridge saw the existing, heavily corroded bridge deck replaced with a modern steel composite construction capable of supporting full highway loading. The parapets were also upgraded and the retaining walls refurbished. The Project Wareham team of civil and rail engineers restored and re-connected a heritage railway branch line to the mainline, benefitting the local community with a regular additional mode of transport and the Wessex Water Supply Grid brings security to Wessex Water’s customers in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. The £230 million, eight year integrated supply grid project in now almost complete.
This year’s awards are being sponsored by Kier Group.
