Carmel says goodbye to Poole Hospice
Colleagues and families have paid tribute to Carmel, who worked at Forest Holme Hospice for 13 years, and has now retired.
A nurse who has worked for the NHS for 30 years and for 13 years at Forest Holme Hospice has retired.
Known affectionately by colleagues as the ‘Pocket Rocket’, Carmel has been a constant source of strength, warmth and reassurance to patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments. Her retirement has prompted an outpouring of messages from the local community, with hundreds taking to social media to share their memories and gratitude.
For many, Carmel’s care went far beyond clinical support. She brought calm when it was needed most, treated every person with dignity, and had a natural ability to know exactly what someone needed in the moment. Families have frequently spoken of her kindness staying with them long after their time at the hospice.
One family said: “We will be forever grateful for the care and compassion she showed us.” Another said: “She left a mark on my heart and my soul with her kindness and going the extra mile. Nothing was ever too much.”
Colleagues also remember Carmel for her uplifting presence within the team, highlighting that even on the hardest days, she carried a smile and a sense of humour that brought light into the room. Her approach to care has influenced not only patients and families, but generations of staff who have worked alongside her.
Another message said: “You always had a smile on your face even when times were tough and treated patients and colleagues with compassion and kindness.”
A spokesperson for Forest Holme Hospice said: “Carmel represents everything that hospice care stands for. She has given so much of herself to others over the years, and the difference she has made is immeasurable. It has been a privilege to have her as part of our team, and she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to shape the care we provide. As she begins this next chapter, the hospice extends its thanks and warmest wishes for a happy retirement.”
