Bournemouth Orchid Society has triumphed by scooping one of only three Royal Horticultural Society judged gold medals awarded to amateur orchid displays at the recent Royal Three Counties Show in Malvern.
Preparation for the display began nine months ago with the show team designing, sourcing materials and pre-constructing the large display stand off-site.
Nick Fry, Bournemouth Orchid Society’s press officer said, “Amateur displaying differs from trade displaying in that you do not know what plants members will be able to provide until a few days before the show. This adds up to a large leap of faith when cash squeezed societies finance materials without knowing if the team will have sufficient amateur grown high quality plants to fill the display. Anyway, it finally paid off with a gold medal being awarded to the society along with two well-deserved best amateur awards.”
These were: Best Amateur Paphiopedilum awarded to Colin Carter; Best Amateur Dendrobium awarded to Jeff Hands.
