Corfe Mullen hospice team to embark on 1,083-mile challenge
Children’s Hospice Week takes place this week and to mark this, a team from Julia’s House are to cover 1,083 miles.
This week is Children’s Hospice Week, and to mark this a team from children’s hospice charity, Julia’s House, are to run, walk, swim and cycle 1,083 miles over the coming weekend of 22 and 23 June.
1,083 miles is the distance from the Julia’s House hospice in Corfe Mullen to every one of the families in Dorset who are supported by the charity.
A total of 17 members of staff including carers, nurses, administrators and IT have been training hard over the last few months for the epic challenge, which they hope will raise £5,000 to help Julia’s House continue to provide its life-changing care in the local community.
The 1083 team will be taking on their challenge at BH Live in Corfe Mullen, starting at 9am on Saturday 22 June and finishing at the Julia’s House hospice at 5pm on Sunday 23 June. With use of the gym and pool kindly donated by BH Live, the team will be running, walking, swimming and cycling the 1,083 miles across the weekend. The final miles will be finished with a group walk back to the hospice in Corfe Mullen to celebrate and have a rest.
“I had the idea for this challenge a couple of years ago but was injured until now” says Julia’s House senior care administrator, Michelle Lewis, who has brought the 1083 team together.
“I really wanted to get three things from the challenge, firstly to highlight the distance we cover to provide our amazing respite care to the families we support across the county and vice versa when they come to the hospice for care sessions.
“Secondly, to give staff members some form of health and wellbeing time to help train for the event and it has done just that. We have joined gyms, gone to workout classes together, got back in the pool and lots more activities as well. Most importantly, it has given us all a sense of team ethos outside of work and we have had great fun doing it.
“Last but not least, we rely on the generosity of the local community to keep our vital service going, without that support we just wouldn’t exist, so it also felt like a great opportunity to mark Children’s Hospice Week and fundraise too.”
