It will be 100 years ago, on 31 May, that the world saw the beginning of the largest naval fleet battle of modern times.
Ferndown Royal British Legion is commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Jutland throughout May starting with an illustrated talk of ‘The Story of Jutland’ at the RBL Building in Church Road, Ferndown on Thursday 19 May at 8pm presented by Lieutenant Commander Ralph Dodds, Royal Navy (retired). The talk is open to all and free of charge with a voluntary collection for the Poppy Appeal.
Closer to the anniversary date, there will be a Battle of Jutland display including a seven-foot model of a World War 1 Dreadnought Battleship at the RBL Building, on show over the weekend of 28 and 29 May before a Centenary Service of Commemoration on Sunday 29 May at 11.30 am in the Garden of Remembrance at the RBL Building, open to all.
The Battle of Jutland lasted for 36 hours with 250 warships and over 100,000 sailors involved; 8,500 were killed and one in ten wounded. Four Victoria Crosses were awarded for actions on the day.
