Five trophies for Poole skittlers

A Skittles Extravaganza in Devon produced wins for Poole players with Steve Shear and Jordan Nicolls scooping the Men’s Pairs.

Poole can boast some champion skittles players after the town’s skittlers returned from Torquay with an impressive haul of trophies. The 4th Serious About Events Skittles Extravaganza, held at the Derwent Hotel in Torquay from 25–27 September, saw more than 250 skittlers from across the country’s traditional skittling counties descend on the Devon town.

A packed weekend of competition saw players battling it out across singles, pairs and team tournaments. The Poole contingent came away with several trophies and titles between them. Among the weekend’s standout results were:

Mixed Pairs Winner – Suzi Porter
Mixed Pairs Runner-Up – Jason Twine
Men’s Pairs Winners – Steve Shear and Jordan Nicolls
Ladies’ Singles Runner-Up – Tash Davis

The three-day Skittles Extravaganza combines competitive skittles with the social atmosphere for which the sport is so well known. Matches run throughout the weekend, bringing together teams and players who would rarely compete against one another during their normal local league seasons.

Organiser and company director of Serious About Events, Rachel Hosking, said the Poole players had enjoyed an exceptional weekend. She said: “With more than 250 skittlers taking part, there was some brilliant competition, so to see the Poole players come away with five trophies and titles was a fantastic achievement.

“One of the things we love about these weekends is bringing skittlers together from different counties and leagues. Not only do they compete against new teams, they also get to see the different styles and traditions that exist around the country — and the Poole double-handed delivery certainly got people talking!

“There is plenty of friendly rivalry on the alleys, but just as importantly a fantastic social atmosphere off them. Poole certainly made its mark this year.”

Teams from Wallisdown, Moordown, Corfe, Poole and other towns compete in a local Poole District Skittles league if you wish to join in.
