Fordingbridge rector receives big send off
The Rev Canon Gary Philbrick, rector of the seven Avon Valley Churches, says farewell to Fordingbridge at a special service.
Such was the popularity of the Rev Canon Gary Philbrick that a huge number of people from the seven Avon Valley Churches gathered for his farewell service at Burgate School and Sixth Form in Fordingbridge on Sunday 29 May.
Moving tributes, anecdotes, photographs and hymns were shared and enjoyed to celebrate his ministry as rector of Avon Valley Churches, throughout the parish, from 2013-2022.
Not only was he rector, he was a bell ringer, pianist, organist, composer, mentor and friend to many and there were glowing tributes.
“I will be forever grateful to Gary for providing such an amazing foundation for my ministry,” said the Rev Mike Trotman.
“Gary spread himself so widely, quickly and affectionately throughout our communities and has been so benevolent to us all. He will be much missed but we give our warmest blessings for a role that is perfect for him at the Cathedral,” said the Rev John Towler.
Gary was presented with a line drawing of all seven churches in the parish by artist Jen Oulton, as well as a gift from the Fordingbridge Air Cadets, just one group of people Gary supported in the community.
Conducted by Hazel Ricketts and accompanied by Tim Ruffer, the St Mary’s Fordingbridge Choir then performed a moving rendition of Gaelic Blessing, written and arranged by Gary himself.
Gary said: “I thank you, Avon Valley Churches, for the love, kindness and support you have shown me over these last years. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to minister in this place. As I leave, I carry with me all that I have learned here.”
Gary now begins a new chapter as cathedral chaplain at Winchester Cathedral. He will combine his work as chaplain, in which he will be responsible for the pastoral care and support of cathedral staff, volunteers and regular worshippers, with that of assistant archdeacon for the Diocese of Winchester. Gary will also have a distinctive liturgical role in contributing to key pastoral services.
The dean of Winchester, the Very Rev Catherine Ogle said: “Gary is extremely well placed to make a significant contribution to the life of Winchester Cathedral as its next chaplain. Gary’s appointment is a real benefit to the cathedral, bringing with him a gracious, thoughtful, wise and encouraging presence, which I know will make him a brilliant addition to the team.”
