There is free admission to the Priest’s House Museum & Garden in Wimborne as part of Dorset Architectural Heritage Week on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September.
Discover the museum’s stunning Roman wall paintings, the fascinating childhood gallery and a unique Victorian Valentine card collection as the museum tells the story of East Dorset. Explore period rooms from a 17th century hall to the working Victorian kitchen, finding out how life and work has changed in this historic townhouse. Wander through a beautiful and peaceful walled garden, with flowering borders, lawns and heritage fruit trees leading down to the mill stream. The Garden Tea Room, where visitors can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink, delicious cakes, cream tea and a selection of light savoury snacks, will be open.
Visitors will be able to meet a Roman soldier who will be kitted out in Roman legionary uniform and displaying equipment as used at a large Roman fort. Visitors will discover what it is like to wear and maintain a full military kit.
Take the opportunity to view the new exhibition, ‘Somme’. The exhibition has been developed by Martin Barry and examines the build up to the offensive from the perspectives of the infantry soldier and officer, comparing life in the trench and the officer’s dugout. It depicts a reserve trench, showing the contrast between the soldier, who was exposed to the elements, and the officer’s dugout.
Somerset and Dorset Family History Society will also have a stand at the museum on the Saturday.
