Green festival kicks off in Wimborne
The Planet Wimborne Green Festival began with an eco fair on the Minster Green on Saturday 11 October.
A week-long festival aiming to raise awareness of eco-friendly practices and sustainable living is taking place in Wimborne Minister until Saturday 18 October.
The Planet Wimborne Green Festival began on Saturday 11 October with an eco fair on the Minster Green, where local community groups including Wimborne Foodbank+, War On Waste, and Wimborne Community Theatre, Trees for Wimborne, and Wimborne Contemporary Arts were on hand to speak to members of the public about what they do and how they could help.
There was also a transport hub in the Square, where members of the public could learn about alternative means of getting around such as cycling.
Project Planet Earth, founded by swimmer Oly Rush, informed the public about plastic pollution on Dorset’s beaches, and had a giant sculpture on display. Percy the Plesiosuar, made in 2023 by artist Glenn Martin, is made entirely from plastic rubbish collected from the beach in one afternoon.
The Green Festival was officially opened by Paralympic silver-medal-winning canoeist Jack Eyers, with Wimborne’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Simon Wheeler, Town Crier Chris Brown, the Rev Canon Andrew Roland, and Planet Wimborne Chairperson, Linda Bunting.
Before cutting the ribbon, Eyers thanked the organisers for inviting him and stressed the importance of protecting Britain’s waterways.
The Quarterjacks of Wimborne Marching Band then led a procession from the Minster Green to the Square and performed.
This week, there will be talks, workshops and free film screenings all about the environment. To see the full programme of events, visit https://planetwimborne.org/wimborne-green-festival.
