Greener Wimborne series launches this April
The collaboration between Planet Wimborne and Wimborne u3a begins with a presentation at The Reef in Colehill.
Local people will be able to find out about environmental issues in a series of talks, the first of which takes place on 20 April at The Reef in Colehill Lane.
‘What is Planet Wimborne?’ is the first in a series entitled ‘Greener Wimborne, Better Planet’.
Designed as an accessible and welcoming introduction, the talk explores Planet Wimborne’s mission, its environmental awards and the wide network of green community groups it supports. Participants will also learn how the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals guide Planet Wimborne’s work and influence practical environmental action at a local level.
Planet Wimborne trustees Dr Neil Smith, Linda Bunting and Adrian Newton, who will be leading the first talk, said: “We’re delighted to be working with u3a to offer five environmental sessions.
“We’re always looking for new ways to talk to as wide an audience as possible to encourage people to take action for the environment, and these sessions are a great way to do just that. We aim to give hope and inspire action.”
This talk is part of a five-session programme over the next three months and is a new collaboration between u3a Wimborne and Planet Wimborne, bringing together lifelong learning and local environmental action to help people explore environmental issues through discussion, practical insight and hands-on experience.
Each session in the Greener Wimborne, Better Planet series stands alone, lasts between two and three hours, and combines expert knowledge with opportunities for discussion and exploration. The series is free for u3a members and £10 for non-members.
Following the launch session, later talks in the series will explore waste reduction, wildlife-friendly gardening, the role of the arts in environmental awareness and a guided nature walk in the local landscape. Topics include practical approaches to cutting household waste, supporting wildlife in gardens, enjoying culture sustainably during Wimborne’s Town of Culture year, and discovering the natural heritage of Badbury Rings.
Ashley Rowlands, Wimborne u3a chairman, said: “Together, Wimborne u3a and Planet Wimborne hope the programme will inspire people to learn more, connect with others and see how small community actions can contribute to a healthier planet.”
