Mosaic artwork installed along Christchurch coastline
The artwork includes the Natterjack Toad, an Oystercatcher, Grey Heron, Stonechat and Shore Crab from Mudeford Quay to Gundimore Beach.
A series of 14 mosaic artworks are now enhancing the Christchurch coastline.
Installed on the sea wall that links Mudeford Quay to Gundimore Beach, each mosaic illustrates a species of wildlife local to the area.
Each mosaic is made from hand-cut and glazed ceramic pieces, designed and created by Christchurch-based artist Iffy (real name Matthew Byrom). The artwork aims to brighten up the popular pathway between the quay and beaches.
Cllr Andy Martin, portfolio holder for Customer, Communication and Culture, said: “This wonderful new mosaic series is a fantastic addition to our coastline, celebrating both the rich wildlife of Christchurch and the creativity of our local community.
“Projects like this show how culture can bring people of all ages together, enhance our public spaces, improve health and wellbeing and foster a deeper appreciation of the natural environment we’re so lucky to have here in BCP.”
While developing the design for the artwork, Byrom led a series of community engagement workshops with local community groups, schoolchildren and youth groups. These workshops introduced participants to the art of mosaic and explored the community’s connection to the heritage and nature of the area.
Artist Matthew Byrom said: “It’s been a pleasure working on this project and engaging with the wider community in the area. I’ve been so impressed with the passion and generosity of everyone that I’ve met and loved getting to see everyone’s individual creativity in the workshops that I’ve hosted.
“I think that artwork outside is a great way to bring art to people who might not go to a gallery. It’ll brighten commutes and dog walks, and make the area feel cared for.
“The 14 tactile artworks in this mosaic series have been created using over 1,000 handmade ceramic pieces. It’s a great privilege for me to be able to make this artwork for my hometown and I hope it’ll be enjoyed by lots of people for years to come.”
Wildlife portrayed in the artwork includes the Natterjack Toad, which now has a stable population at nearby Hengistbury Head due to careful conservation efforts. An Oystercatcher, Grey Heron and Stonechat are among the bird species also featured and can all be found around the Mudeford and Stanpit Marsh area. The Shore Crab is also represented, a species that will invoke memories of crabbing along the quayside for many visitors.
