To raise some much needed awareness of legacies and how the local community can support Diverse Abilities, the local disability charity has joined forces with Remember A Charity, the largest consortium of its kind in the UK working to promote legacy giving.
As part of the ‘Remember a Charity in your Will’ week, taking place from 12 – 18 September, Diverse Abilities is asking supporters to share their words of wisdom and pass on legendary advice. The charity will be using these words of wisdom to prompt discussion about passing on something else legendary – a donation in their will.
With many people saying they would consider including a gift to charity after providing for their family and friends in their will, and only a small percentage doing so, there is huge potential to increase income from legacies.
Helen Mortimer, fundraising manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “Every year, more and more people like to leave a gift to charity in their will. These legendary acts provide the foundation for causes like ours and are vital in continuing our work. That’s why we’re taking part in Remember a Charity in your Will Week.
“It’s a common myth that you have to be wealthy to leave a gift in your will to help us, but nothing could be further from the truth. After taking care of family and friends, you’ll be amazed at what one final gift, no matter how big or small, can do.”
To be a legend during Remember a Charity in your Will Week and pass on your words of wisdom, tweet your advice to Diverse Abilities (@diverseability) and use hashtag #MyWisdom, share on Facebook and tag in Diverse Abilities or email them direct to helen.mortimer@diverseabilities.org.uk
Supporters can also get involved further by making a will. Diverse Abilities has teamed up with a number of local solicitors to offer the Dorset community 50 per cent off making a new will or amending an existing will during Make a Will Fortnight taking place from 19 – 30 September.
All the charity is asking for in return is a donation in your will, but there is no obligation to do so to benefit from the discount. But this legendary act will ensure the charity can continue its vital work supporting hundreds of children and adults in the county.
Helen added: “We hope that this discounted will offer will help more people to plan for their families’ future. Any donations people make to Diverse Abilities will provide vital support for children and adults with disabilities in the local community.”
Sadie and Kevin Smith, parents to James who has been supported by the charity for over 17 years, said: “We have chosen to support Diverse Abilities through a donation in our will as they are a charity very close to our hearts. Our son has been cared for at their children’s respite home and their amazing school for the last 17 years. There are other charities which claim to support profoundly disabled children and adults in Dorset but it’s Diverse Abilities who deliver what they promise.”
