The Royal Bournemouth Hospital held a successful study day about respiratory diseases in a move to improve care for respiratory patients in hospitals and the community.
Health professionals from across Dorset, including GPs, nurses, health care assistants and consultants, attended the study day to learn about best practice in respiratory care from RBH’s specialist multi-disciplinary respiratory team.
Attendees were provided with a comprehensive guide to respiratory care pathways, from diagnosis and symptom management to how to provide effective palliative care.
The day sessions included a presentation exploring the link between breathlessness and anxiety, how physiotherapy can assist respiratory patients by making muscles stronger and also an interactive workshop about medicines and inhalers.
RBH clinical specialist physiotherapist, Dr Iain Hill, who organised the study day said: “Lung diseases are degenerative so it’s really important patients are diagnosed and referred to a specialist as quickly as possible to start treatment. We want to help health care professionals in Dorset recognise the symptoms of lung disease and understand the process of referral and treatment so we can improve outcomes for patients sooner.”
Statistics from the British Lung Foundation show lung diseases are responsible for nearly 700,000 hospital admissions and over 6 million inpatient bed-days in the UK each year.
