Pupils from Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth used their baking skills to help the county’s cancer sufferers.
Class 5P at the school in Rothesay Road, Talbot Woods, made cup cakes, flapjacks, cake pops, toffee apples and all manner of fairy cakes for a tea party in aid of Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF).
Not surprisingly their confections sold like ‘hot cakes’ and the event raised £145.20 for the cancer charity.
Dorset Cancer Care Foundation (DCCF) provides practical help for cancer sufferers by awarding grants to pay for everything from transport to and from hospital, to childcare, counselling and even household bills. DCCF is asking people to help them make more grants by hosting fundraising tea parties during the month of June.
Eve Went, one of the founders of DCCF said, “We were thrilled to learn that the girls from Talbot Heath were holding a tea party for us. Their cakes looked absolutely delicious and I’m told they sold out in a flash.”
She added, “The £145.20 the girls’ raised is very impressive and I hope they are all very proud of themselves. We now hope their generosity will inspire other schools, WI groups, care homes and local businesses to hold a tea party for DCCF. Every penny raised will go directly to helping cancer sufferers here in Dorset.”
Karen Leahy, head of the Junior School at Talbot Heath, said: “Talbot Heath has a long tradition, going back 130 years, of service to others in the community and to see this living in our current pupils is a truly wonderful thing.
“The girls were so enthusiastic to work together to help raise money for the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation and they thoroughly enjoyed organising and running the event. It was for such a worthwhile cause and the girls were thrilled to play a part in helping others.”
