Valentine’s celebration for Ferndown couple
Naomi and Richard Sutton, who became engaged 69 years ago, were treated to an intimate dining experience at their Ferndown care home.

On 14 February 1956, Naomi and Richard Sutton became engaged and the two residents of Kings Park Care Home married in April the following year.
To mark this milestone, the couple were treated to an intimate dining experience at the Ferndown care home.
Naomi, who was born in Hereford, and Richard, originally from Weymouth, first met in 1955. Naomi was studying at Weymouth Teacher Training College and Richard was serving in the Merchant Navy. After his ship docked in Swansea, Richard had to travel to Weymouth. Feeling tired from his journey, he almost skipped attending the dance being held at Naomi’s college. However, a friend who had already bought two tickets convinced him to go.
It was there, across the dance floor, that Richard spotted Naomi and asked for her first dance, the first of many they would share that evening and for the rest of their lives. They have two children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Jenna May, general manager of the home which is run by Barchester Healthcare, said: “We feel so privileged to celebrate such an occasion with Naomi and Richard and are honoured to make this Valentine’s Day special, recognising that magical day back in 1956.”
