Visitor attraction at hospital open day
From touring the operating theatres to bandaging up their teddies, hundreds of people spent the day looking behind the scenes at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s Open Day on Saturday 9 September.
The day, the largest open event the Trust has ever held, was attended by over 500 people and saw departments open to the public, with over 60 stands and activities. The theatre tours proved particularly popular and children lined up at the Teddy Bear Clinic to have their favourite toys bandaged up.
A range of activities ran throughout the day including health talks, health checks and tours of departments. Visitors were able to play a giant game of ‘Operation’, take part in a nappy changing speed challenge and visit the Simulation Suite to meet ‘Sim Man’ and find out more about training at the hospital.
RBH’s new helipad was also in action as the air ambulance landed, joining the other emergency services who all attended on the day.
Bournemouth Hospital Charity greeted visitors with stalls, facepainting, tombolas and a raffle while the Trust’s recruitment teams highlighted the range of roles at the hospital.
The event also combined with the Trust’s Annual Members’ Meeting, which was well attended.
Uresha Kumarage said, “It’s been a brilliant day. My son is six and he’s learned a lot and it’s been a great insight for us as well. We’ve especially enjoyed the cardiology stand and have signed up to be organ donors, too.”
Emma Way, deputy sister for Recovery, commented, “It’s been a really successful day with so many people coming through theatres. There’s been a real range of ages – from young families through to more elderly people and we’ve had great feedback. We hope this experience will make it less daunting for anyone having to come into hospital.”
Paula Shobbrook, director of Nursing and Midwifery, said, “We’re delighted with how the day has gone, it’s been lovely to see so many smiling faces and our staff have gone above and beyond to showcase our incredible services. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our Open Day.”
