Wimborne museum hosts First World War research project
The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset is a research project at The Museum of East Dorset.
With Remembrance Day in a few weeks’ time, The Museum of East Dorset is inviting people in the area to find out more about their brave loved ones who fought in the First World War.
Through a comprehensive, free database, people can explore individual records of over a thousand serving men and women from Wimborne and the locality. The database includes military and death records and photographs where available.
This research facility is part of the Wimborne museum’s ‘The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset’ project.
Museum Director Francesca Hollow said: “Our aim has been to ensure the names of those who died in the conflict from the community are available in one place for current and future generations.
“To make sure that the precious photographs, letters, diaries, postcards, medals and other links to the First World War are recorded, we worked with the local community to take digital photographs of the artefacts and memorabilia they shared with us to ensure these are recorded, firstly on our own website and also shared with the ‘Lives of the First World War’ Imperial War Museum digital project.”
You can find the database and war memorial information on the Museum of East Dorset website.
