12-hour dance-a-thon in Bournemouth raises over £1,600
A Bournemouth dance school held a 12-hour dance-a-thon to raise funds to support a class for those living with Parkinson’s disease.
Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth organised a 12-hour dance-a-thon on Friday 13 September to celebrate 12 years of its weekly Parkinson’s Dance class which supports those living with Parkinson’s disease to enjoy the social, fun and creative benefits of dance.
The small team of six from the dance school danced from 7am to 7pm to raise funds to support the Parkinson’s Dance class. Donations enable the school to keep the class running and support carers going free with participants.
A total of £1,600 was raised by the dance-a-thon. Some of the proceeds will go towards ongoing research into Parkinson’s Dance Science – the model that the classes are based on created by Dr Sophia Hulbert and Aimee Hobbs – both of whom danced for the whole 12 hours
Starting at 7am, the team had a warmup by the sea, followed by a whole day of dance sessions and classes.
One of the team members said: “We joined our Mature Movers class, our Parkinson’s Dance class and our burlesque class as part of the days activities with a bit of YMCA, Spice Girls, Beyonce and Oops Upside Your Head and the Conga thrown into the dance mix!”
The team included: Lisa Lort, wellbeing producer; Aimee Hobbs, Parkinson’s Dance teacher and creator; Dr Sophia Hulbert, Parkinson’s Dance science model creator; Sammy Gillingham, Parkinson’s Dance teacher; Naomi Dickens, finance manager and Caron Ward, marketing and comms manager.
The Parkinson’s Dance class was established in 2012. It combines physiotherapeutic effect, research evidence and the artistic experience of dance to address Parkinson’s symptoms in a fun, social and creative way.
One of the participants described the classes as “the best Friday afternoons ever.” They added: “Always different, always fun and a feeling of relaxation as well as hard work, of course. Laughter and happy times.”
