First School pupils discover Poole Harbour wildlife
Parley First School’s head said it was wonderful to see children so engaged and excited by the natural world.
Pupils from Parley First School have enjoyed the opportunity to observe ospreys hunting in the wild. Year 4 pupils were able to discover the diverse wildlife and rich habitats that make Poole Harbour a nationally significant conservation area.
During the trip, pupils learned about the unique ecosystem found within the harbour and the importance of protecting local wildlife for future generations.
Experts from the RSPB shared their knowledge about the area’s birds, marine life and delicate habitats, helping children understand why conservation matters and how everyone can play a part in safeguarding the natural world.
Rather than viewing wildlife through screens or technology, the children used binoculars to observe these magnificent birds in their natural environment.
John Bagwell, headteacher said: “It was wonderful to see our children so engaged and excited by the natural world.
“Poole Harbour is one of Dorset’s greatest treasures, and experiences like this help children develop a real appreciation for the environment around them.
“We hope that by learning about wildlife first-hand, our pupils will become passionate advocates for protecting these special places in the future.”
The visit formed part of the school’s commitment to providing enriching learning opportunities beyond the classroom. By connecting curriculum learning with real-life experiences, Parley First School aims to inspire curiosity, develop environmental awareness and encourage children to become responsible custodians of the world around them.
For many of the pupils, the sight of an osprey diving in search of fish will remain a lasting memory. More importantly, the trip helped demonstrate that some of life’s most extraordinary experiences do not require virtual reality or digital devices. Sometimes all that is needed is a pair of binoculars, an open sky and the chance to witness nature at its very best.
