Dorset Police have issued a warning to residents of Ferndown following a report of courier fraud.

A fraud alert has been issued by Dorset Police, warning the residents of Ferndown to watch out for scammers.

The alert comes after a recent report of courier fraud in the area. Courier fraud involves a scam where criminals posing as bank officials or the police trick victims into handing over money, bank cards or items to a courier.

A resident in Ferndown was defrauded after receiving a text message claiming to be from their bank provider, Lloyds, warning of suspicious activity involving their bank account.

The victim was then contacted by a fraudster posing as a bank representative and convinced they were assisting with an urgent investigation. Subsequently, the victim was coerced into handing over their bank cards and mobile phone to a courier.

The police have issued this advice to help others avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

First, remember that your bank or the police will never ask you to hand over your bank cards, PIN, or personal devices. They will never send a courier to collect your belongings.

Also, remember that fraudsters can make calls and texts appear genuine — do not trust contact out of the blue.

Here’s how to protect yourself. If you receive a suspicious call or message, stop the communication and verify if it is genuine. Contact your bank directly using the number on the back of your card.

Do not share PINs, passwords, or one-time codes with anyone.

Be wary of pressure tactics — fraudsters often create urgency to stop you thinking clearly. Talk to friends or family if something doesn’t feel right.
