Gwen Raggett, a resident at Hyacinth House Care Home, notched up 60 years with the Royal Voluntary Service.
A care home resident who has completed 60 years with the Royal Voluntary Service has been honoured at a celebration attended by three local mayors.
Gwen Raggett, a resident at Hyacinth House Care Home in Stapehill, was awarded the MBE is 2006.
Local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Terry Cordery, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wimborne Cllr Jeff Hart and Barbara Hart and the Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr George Farquhar, joined members of Gwen’s family for the celebration.
Maria Jacobson, Royal Voluntary Service manager for Dorset and the Home Library Service, and Gwen’s family approached Hyacinth House about presenting Gwen with her 60-year badge and certificate. They wanted to create a memorable event and Hyacinth House organised a special lunch to mark the milestone. Maria Jacobson, accompanied by David Tozier, RSV Service Assistant for BCP Home Library Service, delivered a speech reflecting on Gwen’s incredible service, especially within the Books on Wheels programme.
Gwen’s volunteering journey began in October 1964 with the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), now known as the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS). Her first role involved driving a green van, and over the years, she served in numerous positions, including supporting refugees, participating in emergency services, and coordinating Meals on Wheels in Bournemouth. Even after retiring from her official roles, Gwen continued her voluntary work, delivering Books on Wheels until the pandemic interrupted the service.
Gwen said: “My first task was to collect clothing in an old Ford van for people in need. Also, we worked at a baby clinic handing out baby food such as powdered milk and orange juice. Over the years I worked at the Hospital Canteen, Meals on Wheels, Books on Wheels, Victim Support and Harvest Distribution.”
Her family shared touching stories of Gwen’s dedication recalling how she never hesitated to cover for others and formed close bonds with the people she served. Even during the pandemic, she kept in touch with many of her clients, ensuring they were well and coping.
Heather Raggett said: “Gwen just epitomises the spirit of selfless service: from her Land Army days onwards. We are all so proud of her.”
Kamila Gagala, general manager of Barchester Hyacinth House, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman, she is an inspiration to us all and we are so proud of her.”
