Bournemouth University student wins British Gymnastics gold
Trampoline gold celebrated at the British Gymnastics Championships.
Bournemouth University BSc Psychology student and Sports Scholar Freya Wicks was crowned champion at the recent British Gymnastics Championships.
Held at the Telford International Centre on 4 October, Freya won in the ‘Senior Women Trampolining’ category, achieving a personal best score. You can watch her winning performance here.
She said: “I always dreamed of becoming senior British Champion and for it to happen in my first year of competing as a senior at the British Championships was just unbelievable and I am still in shock now. It’s hard to put into words how I actually felt. I also received a personal best (PB) in the final, which added to the high.”
The British Gymnastics Championships are an annual event involving three sporting disciplines under one roof including trampolining, double mini trampoline (DMT) and gymnastic tumbling. Gymnasts from across the country compete for national titles over the course of one weekend.
Freya who is currently studying her degree at BU in Psychology alongside her sports scholarship said: “Having a sports scholarship at BU will mean that I am able to accept all opportunities given to me to excel in my trampolining career without having to worry about the financial burden of them, including international and national competitions and training opportunities. Also having the gym membership and having access to facilities will help me improve on my performance. A lot of work gets put in away from the trampoline in training sessions, so it will be really comforting knowing how much support I will have around me.”
