Dorset Paralympian, Lucy Shuker, joins Sir Stephen Fry to front LGBTQ+ youth campaign
Wheelchair tennis star campaigns for understanding and safer spaces for young LGBTQ+ people.
Three Legged Cross resident Lucy Shuker BEM is working alongside some of the biggest names from film, television, music and sport for The Proud Trust’s new #DeserveBetter campaign film.
It calls for greater understanding, safer spaces and better support for LGBTQ+ young people. Lucy is one of Britain’s leading wheelchair tennis players, has represented Great Britain at five Paralympic Games and made history at London 2012 by winning Great Britain’s first-ever Paralympic medal in wheelchair tennis.
Lucy is among 30 LGBTQ+ celebrities and high-profile allies teaming up to front the film – with the others being Dannii Minogue, Sir Stephen Fry, Dame Kelly Holmes, Tom Allen, Danny Beard and many more involved.
The LGBTQ+ youth charity The Proud Trust supports thousands of young people each year through youth groups, mentoring, one-to-one support, family services, education programmes, professional training and its Rainbow Flag Award programme.
The campaign is launched as figures showing 43% of LGBTQ+ pupils experience bullying because of who they are, 58% have seriously considered suicide and almost a quarter may never complete secondary school. Watch the video here.
