New skate park proposed for Poole
The existing park at Baiter will be extensively refurbished as part of BCP Council’s multi-million-pound Plan for Play strategy.
Poole is set to have a new skate park at Baiter.
Plans have now been submitted to fully refurbish the site, with the proposed upgrades earmarked as part of BCP Council’s multi-million-pound Plan for Play strategy.
If the planning application is approved, the £400,000 investment will deliver a skate park incorporating ideas from local skaters of all ages.
The existing facilities in Poole first opened in 1999. The funding, allocated from the Plan for Play budget, provides an opportunity to modernise what’s on offer and encourage the next generation of skaters from across BCP.
The design of the new concrete skate park includes a mix of street features, transition elements and open space designed to support users of all ages and abilities.
Cllr Sandra Moore, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for Play Strategy, said: “Baiter is a flagship investment in our Plan for Play strategy, and the submission of this planning application is a significant milestone towards creating a skate park fit for the future.
“I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to effectively co-create an exciting design with the very community that will use it on a regular basis.
“Whether you’re the next Tony Hawk or simply trying to land your first ollie, these proposals have something for everyone, and we are proud to be working alongside Maverick in delivering that inclusive vision.”
Having worked alongside Maverick Skateparks and existing users to put together a wish list of elements, a concept design was produced and then influenced by feedback, as part of a detailed public consultation, to arrive at the final design, which has now been submitted as part of the planning application.
As the proposals are a major new development, the plans are now subject to the usual planning application process.
Russ Holbert, director at Maverick Skateparks, said: “Baiter Skatepark has been at the heart of Poole’s riding scene for decades, so it has been a real privilege to help shape its future.
“Working alongside BCP Council and the local skateboarding community has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project. The passion, ideas and memories people shared have helped create a design that respects Baiter’s history while giving the next generation something they can truly call their own.
“We hope the new space brings people together, creates lifelong memories and continues to inspire Poole for many years to come. We can’t wait to see it come to life.”
BCP Council’s flagship Plan for Play strategy is a £4.6 million investment in play facilities across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Around 120 play areas will be improved as a result of the funding, including major refurbishments at priority sites, new equipment and resurfacing work, and proposals for brand new play areas.
Cllr Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for Parks, said: “I know first-hand just how well used and loved the current skate track has been over the past 25 years and more.
“These proposals represent an exciting new vision for the location that truly modernises the facilities and is inspired directly by the local skating community, who have been consulted throughout.
“It’s fantastic to be working with Maverick, a local, world-class brand, on this project and I am looking forward to seeing this built.”
Public representations can be made on the proposals using BCP Council’s planning portal. Search for application number P/26/02919/FUL.
