Poole celebrates Working Boat Day with tours on SS Shieldhall
Friday is Working Boat Open Day on Poole Quay, with a special guest in the elegant form of SS Shieldhall taking part.
The Poole Harbour Commissioners’ Working Boat Open Day takes place on 14 August, offering access to the harbour’s workhorse vessels. The harbour master and team will be answering the public’s questions about life in and around the quay, operations with the massive vessels that visit and more.
The public can access the working boat pontoon for free, the RNLI lifeboat station and the boats between 2PM and 6PM on the Friday.
A special visitor is the steamship SS Shieldhall, Visitors can explore the impressive bridge, its magnificent engine Room and boiler room, and enjoy the spectacular views from her decks.
The steamship crew offers three paid cruises for passengers over the weekend. She sets sail to the Jurassic coast with shanty singers the Wareham Whalers on Saturday. To the Needles with the Dorset Mutineers Shanty Band on Sunday and takes a one-way voyage back home to Southampton on Monday with a return coach trip (at extra cost).
